The Public Theater, which also shepherded Tesori's Caroline, or Change, and Kron's Well and In the Wake, will present Fun Home beginning Oct. 17 under the direction of Sam Gold (Seminar, Circle Mirror Transformation). The musical has book and lyrics by Kron and a score by Tesori. Performances will run through Nov. 4.
The cast will feature Tony Award nominee Judy Kuhn (Chess, Les Miserables), as well as Roberta Colindrez, Beth Malone and Joel Perez.
Fun Home is billed as "an original new musical about fathers, daughters, cartoons, caskets, and love. Based on Alison Bechdel's acclaimed graphic novel and set in the family business, Bechdel Funeral Home, Fun Home charts Alison's quest to come to terms with her father's life and death by painstakingly reconstructing their shared but unspoken bond. Surprising, funny, ultimately deeply moving, Fun Home is an exciting world-premiere musical from some of New York’s brightest theatrical talents."
The musical has been developed at the Sundance Theatre Lab as well as the Ojai Playwrights Conference in recent seasons.
"Jeanine Tesori and Lisa Kron are both artists who are central to The Public's family, and their adaptation of Alison Bechdel's magnificent graphic novel 'Fun Home' is an inspiring and thrilling endeavor,” Public Theater artistic directr Oskar Eustis said in a statement. "The Public Lab was created to allow shows to develop in dialogue with an audience, rather than in isolation; Fun Home is a perfect match for the Lab." The Public Lab production will have scenic and costume design by David Zinn; lighting design by Ben Stanton; sound design by Kai Harada; video design by Jim Findlay and Jeff Sugg; musical direction by Andy Einhorn; and choreography by David Neumann.
Tickets to Fun Home will go on sale Sept. 18. For tickets, priced $15, phone (212) 967-7555 or visit PublicTheater. The Public Theater is located at 425 Lafayette Street in Manhattan.
