Erivo is joined in London by Olivier Award winner Jenna Russell, Damian Humbley (Forbidden Broadway) and Dean-John Wilson (Here Lies Love as the National Theatre) for performances that will continue through Aug. 8. The revival is helmed by Adam Lenson.
Written when Tony Award-winning composer Brown was just 25, Songs for a New World debuted Off-Broadway in 1995 and had its U.K. premiere in 2001. The show weaves characters, locations and times, spanning from the deck of a Spanish sailing ship to a New York penthouse. It is billed as exploring "the life-changing moments that define us."
Brown's Broadway credits include Honeymoon in Vegas, Parade, 13 and The Bridges of Madison County.
Erivo earned rave reviews from critics for her performance as Celie in the 2013 London engagement of The Color Purple and will reprise her performance in the fall Broadway production, scheduled to begin previews Nov. 9 at the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre.
