Not Ready for Prime Time, Erik J. Rodriguez and Charles A. Sothers' unauthorized new play tracking the early days of long-running sketch comedy series Saturday Night Live, is headed Off-Broadway—and now it has been revealed who will be bringing the 1975 series' iconic original cast to the stage. Performances begin October 5 at the Newman Mills Theater at the Robert W. Wilson MCC Theater Space, ahead of an October 20 opening night. Conor Bagley is directing.
Starring will be Ian Bouillon (Prime Target) as Lorne Michaels, Ryan Crout as John Belushi, Jared Grimes (Funny Girl) as Garrett Morris, Caitlin Houlahan (Girl From The North County, Waitress) as Jane Curtin, Nate Janis as Bill Murray, Kristian Lugo (Watcher) as Dan Ackroyd, Woodrow Proctor as Chevy Chase, Taylor Richardson (The Gilded Age) as Laraine Newman, and Evan Rubin (House of Dynamite) as Gilda Radner. Understudies Gilbert L. Bailey II (Beetlejuice), Jacob Millman (Singfeld), and Jake Roberson will round out the company. Casting is by Stephen DeAngelis.
Set in 1975, the stage play will be the first stage dramatization of SNL's origins. The production will feature scenic design by Justin Swader and Christopher Swader, costume design by Sarita P. Fellows, lighting design by Mextly Couzin, sound design by Liam Bellman-Sharpe, prop design by Samantha Shoffner, and dramaturgy by Fareeda Pasha. James "Fitz" FitzSimmons will serve as production stage manager, with Cyrille Blackburn and Alexandrea Hess Rodriguez as assistant stage managers.
"The talent we’ve assembled for Not Ready for Prime Time is nothing short of extraordinary," says Bagley in a statement. "This cast not only channels the subversive spirit and razor-sharp humor of the original legends but also unearths the heart, vulnerability, and relationships that fueled their groundbreaking work. Our story dives into the personal journeys behind the laughter—the rivalries, the camaraderie, and the sacrifices—that defined a comedy revolution and made this group unforgettable. I couldn’t be more thrilled to bring their world to life for a new generation of audiences."
Though being performed at MCC Theater's space, Not Ready For Prime Time is not an MCC production. Producers are also being clear that the play is not affiliated with SNL in any official capacity.
