The new bilingual musical Roja, a collaboration from Jaime Lozano and Tommy Newman (El Otro Oz), will be developed in residency at the Forestburgh Playhouse, culminating in staged readings at Forestburgh's In the Works-In the Woods Festival in September 2024. Florencia Cuenca will direct the readings.
Roja, an exploration of Little Red Riding Hood through the lens of Mexican folklore, tells the story of a young girl living with her grandmother in America. When she befriends a mischevious, magical coyote, he takes her on a journey across the border into Mexico.
El Otro Oz, which played an Off-Broadway run via Atlantic Theater Company in early 2024, was featured at Forestburgh's inaugural festival in 2021. Forestburgh will host a reception May 25 with performances including sneak peeks of Roja, as well as songs from El Otro Oz and Lozano's album Songs by an Immigrant.
