The New York daily reports that commercial producers will join forces with the Public Theater to produce the new play at the Off-Broadway venue. A Broadway run could follow if there is demand.

The Public Theater has not confirmed the news.

Co-commissioned with Arena Stage, Sweat is set to play there next year as part of the 2015-16 season.

Set in a Pennsylvania town at the turn of the millennium, the characters in Sweat struggle to reclaim what has been lost following the nation's industrial decline. When there is talk of layoffs among a group of factory co-workers and friends, their close bonds begin to shatter. The changes are followed by a horrific crime, which shocks the community.

According to the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, Nottage's newest work is a "thought-provoking look at contemporary American life. It explores the effects of recent economic and trade policies and how a close community responds to devastating change." Following a July 29 debut, performances continue there through Oct. 31.
