Disney's adaptation of Into the Woods, which hits theatres Dec. 25, earned three nominations, including Best Comedy or Musical, Best Actress (Emily Blunt) and Best Supporting Actress (Meryl Streep).
Although the role of the Witch has been placed in the Best Actress category in the past, Disney has been campaigning for a Best Actress nomination for Blunt as the Baker's Wife, with Anna Kendrick and Streep landing in the Supporting Category, for their respective work as Cinderella and the Witch.
Blunt, nominated for a Best Actress award, told Playbill magazine that she knew very little of Into the Woods before discovering them through the eyes of director Rob Marshall. She confided, "I was very, very nervous about going in to audition for it. I really don't like singing in front of people." Click here for the full interview.
As for Streep, the Academy Award-winning actress thought "never in a million years" she'd be asked to take on the Witch. Click here for more of her interview with Playbill magazine.
The HBO adaptation of Kramer's landmark AIDS drama "The Normal Heart" also took three nominations for Best Miniseries or Motion Picture Made for Television, as well as Best Actor (Mark Ruffalo) and Best Supporting Actor (Matt Bomer). Quvenzhané Wallis, who stars in the film remake of "Annie," was nominated for her performance, as was the film's new song, "Opportunity," written by Sia and Greg Kurstin for the remake. Other stage stars who garnered Golden Globe nods include Julianne Moore, Benedict Cumberbatch, Jake Gyllenhaal, Amy Adams, Jessica Chastain, Emma Stone, Ethan Hawke, Kevin Spacey, Viola Davis, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Uzo Aduba, Allison Janney and more.
