Ian McKellen is set to return to the West End this summer as King Lear, according to the Daily Mail. The actor will reprise the title role from Jonathan Munby’s 2017 Chichester Festival Theatre production, alongside Sinéad Cusack, who will return to the role of Kent.

Munby’s King Lear played an acclaimed run at CFT September 22–October 28. The production will now reportedly play a 16-week London engagement at the Duke of York’s Theatre beginning July 12. Further casting for the West End transfer has not yet been announced.
According to the Daily Mail, producers are also eyeing a Broadway transfer.
McKellen was last seen as Lear in New York City just over a decade ago in the Trevor Nunn-helmed production from the Royal Shakespeare Company. The Shakespearean tragedy played the Brooklyn Academy of Music in 2007 in repertory with Chekhov's The Seagull, also starring McKellen.
McKellen was last seen on Broadway in 2013 in the repertory productions of Harold Pinter’s No Man's Land and Samuel Beckett’s Waiting for Godot. He is a Tony winner for his performance in Amadeus.
