'I Don't Think Theatre and Drag are Mutually Exclusive': Bob the Drag Queen on His Broadway Debut

The RuPaul's Drag Race winner is playing Harold Zidler in Moulin Rouge!

Bob the Drag Queen knows how to host. He did, after all, play the host for Madonna's Celebration Tour in 2023 and 2024. So when it comes to playing Harold Zidler in Moulin Rouge! The Musical on Broadway, it felt familiar. "I get to be this big centerpiece. I love attention," Bob tells Playbill's Jeffrey Vizcaíno.

Above, in an interview conducted before the RuPaul's Drag Race winner stepped onstage at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre, the performer (also known as Caldwell Tidicue) discussed working with Madonna, and his degree in theatre education.

Though he's working a crowd instead of working with students (which was his original plan), Bob still sees his drag work as the perfect jumping off point and as a way to inhabit a new character: "Just because it's not on Broadway or even on a stage, doesn't mean it's not theatre."

And when asked what he plans to bring to his version of Zidler, the performer was only a little bit shady, saying, deadpan: "He looks a lot like Bob the Drag Queen, and he sings way better than Wayne Brady and Tituss Burgess. I'm known for my beautiful singing voice, Tituss look out!"

Bob the Drag Queen will perform in Moulin Rouge! until March 22.
