Nicholas Hytner’s new production of Shakespeare’s political thriller Julius Caesar, which stars Ben Whishaw (BBC’s The Hollow Crown, The Danish Girl, The Crucible on Broadway)as Brutus and David Calder as Caesar, officially opened in London January 30.
Julius Caesar also stars Michelle Fairley as Cassius and David Morrissey as Mark Antony. The production will be broadcast on National Theatre Live in March.
Hytner gives theatregoers the option to view his modern-dress, in-the-round production from a seated vantage point overlooking the action, or to purchase a “mob” ticket and stand on the ground level with the actors as Caesar’s assassination plays out.
The limited run is scheduled through April 15. The production designer is Bunny Christie, with costumes by Christina Cunningham, music by Nick Powell, lighting by Bruno Poet, and sound by Paul Arditti.
The Bridge Theatre, a new theatrical venture from former National Theatre Artistic Director Hytner and his former Executive Director Nick Starr, opened its doors in October.
