The American Theatre Wing has reappointed Heather Hitchens as its president and CEO. Hitchens, who has led the group since 2011, has signed a new five-year contract at what the Wing calls "a pivotal moment for the organization." She had previously been working on three-year contracts.
Hitchens has also made two internal promotions as she begins the new phase of her tenure. Ian Weiss will now be vice president, and Ann Marie Gong has been appointed chief of staff.
Under Hitchens' leadership, the Wing has drastically expanded its grant-making and professional development programs, tripling its operating budget over her tenure. The next project the group will embark on is a strategic governance review to strengthen the leadership of its Board of Trustees, currently being led by Interim Chair Ted Chapin. The Wing is looking to find a new chair and a slate of officers in the coming weeks.
"I’m thrilled to continue my work with the American Theatre Wing at a moment of real momentum for the organization," says Hitchens in a statement. "As we look ahead, strengthening our leadership team is essential. Promoting Ian Weiss and Ann Marie Gong recognizes the leadership they already bring to the Wing and ensures we are well positioned to expand our impact and continue serving artists across the country."
"It was a great joy to be the chair when Heather was hired, and now help guide this important process at such a pivotal moment," adds Chapin. "The Wing has grown and flourished beautifully not only thanks to Heather and her team, but also to the phenomenal efforts of the Wing Board of Trustees. Now, is the perfect time to reflect on where we are, where we are going, and how to best position and structure ourselves for continued success."
