Wicked's 11 o'clock number "For Good" has been changed for the better, because former Glinda and Elphaba, Ginna Claire Mason and Mary Kate Morrissey, have released a country-themed version. Listen to the new cover of the Stephen Schwartz song below or on your streaming platform of choice.
Mason and Morrissey, who are real-life besties, starred opposite each other on the hit musical's national tour. They have also played those roles on Broadway, though not at the same time. They also ran a virtual music theatre school together during the pandemic lockdown.
Mason says the idea to release their own version of "For Good" came earlier this year, after Morrissey played her final Broadway performance as the green witch. "I came into her dressing room on her closing night, and said that we should record 'For Good' to document this chapter of our lives. She immediately suggested we do a country version. I thought she was joking! She wasn't. Don't get me wrong—I love country! I'm from Nashville! It just wasn't part of my original vision. But I was totally willing to give it a try!"
Mason says the duo was influenced by country artists like Allison Kraus, Nickel Creek, and Little Big Town. Producer Nathan Nockles helped with the orchestrating and recording. "We even got Stephen Schwartz's blessing to proceed with this newly imagined version of his classic. Some incredible Nashville musicians jumped in to make this dream a reality. I couldn't be happier with how it all turned out! I'm excited for people to finally hear it!"
And yes, Mason says, she has seen the new film Wicked: For Good, noting: "I thought the opening sequence with the yellow brick road was an especially thrilling way to transport us to Oz and to make apparent the incredible tensions present in the Emerald City and beyond! I'm grateful that the films have created a global resurgence of admiration for this show, and built a whole new generation of Wicked lovers."
Wicked continues its run on Broadway at the Gershwin Theatre.
