Tony-nominated composer Paul Gordon (Emma, Jane Eyre) penned the score with a book by Tony-winning director John Caird (Les Miserables, Nicholas Nickleby, Jane Eyre), who also directs. The musical, which is based on Jean Webster's 1912 novel of the same title, will officially open Jan. 23. Broadway's McGinnis (Little Women, Beauty and the Beast, Les Miserables) stars as Jerusha Abbott alongside Hancock (Fiddler on the Roof, Mamma Mia!) as Jervis Pendleton.
According to press notes, "Set in New England in the early 1900's, Daddy Long Legs is the story of Jerusha Abbott, a talented orphan with a wry sense of humor sent to a prestigious college by an anonymous benefactor. With the stipulation that she write him monthly letters, and having only seen a glimpse of his elongated shadow on a wall, she whimsically dubs him 'Daddy Long Legs.' Revealed through her witty wistful letters, her journey to independence, education, and romance chronicles the emergence of a delightfully liberated and self-confident American woman."
Designing set and costumes for the premiere is Tony nominee and Olivier Award winner David Farley (2008 Sunday in the Park With George, 2009 A Little Night Music).
Daddy Long Legs opened the 2009-2010 season at the Rubicon Theatre Company earlier this fall. The Rubicon is a co-producer of the production along with TheatreWorks and the Cincinnati Playhouse.
Following the TheatreWorks engagement, Daddy Long Legs will play the Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park March 13-April 10.
Daddy Long Legs runs through Feb. 14. For tickets phone (650) 903-6000 or visit TheatreWorks.
