Off-Broadway's Public Theater will host the world premiere of a new stage adaptation of Girl, Interrupted beginning in May 2026. Pulitzer-winning playwright Martyna Majok (Cost of Living) is writing the book for the play with music. Majok will be adapting Susanna Kaysen's memoir of the same name, which was also the source material of a 1999 film. Grammy-winning former Til Tuesday front-woman Aimee Mann is writing the music. Jo Bonney will direct.
Kaysen's book, released in 1993, tracks her time in a psychiatric hospital, where she finds a surprising connection with many of the young women on her ward. The 1999 film adaptation starred Wynona Rider as Kaysen, opposite, in an Oscar-winning turn, Angelina Jolie.
The upcoming musical production will also feature choreography by Sonya Tayeh. Casting and further creative team are to be announced.
“Martyna is a playwright of extraordinary sensitivity and power; Aimee is a songwriter of unparalleled insight and beauty," said Public Artistic Director Oskar Eustis in a statement. "Together they’ve created a breathtaking look at women, mental illness, and the all-too flawed systems America has created to handle them. Heart-breaking, inspiring, and profound, under Jo Bonney’s magnificent leadership, this is a show unlike any other.”
Material written for the musical previously comprised Mann's most recent album, Queens of the Summer Hotel.
The Public's premiere will be produced by special arrangement with Barbara Broccoli and Angelica Zollo.
