From Sicily to Bohemia, the classic arts scene in New York is never quiet. Here is just a sampling of some of the classic arts events happening this week.
American Ballet Theatre presents the New York premiere of Christopher Wheeldon's The Winter's Tale July 1-5 at the Metropolitan Opera. Based on the romance by William Shakespeare, Wheeldon’s ballet with a score by Joby Talbot had its world premiere at the Royal Ballet in 2014. The award-winning production features scenic and costume design by Bob Crowley, lighting design by Natasha Katz, video design by Daniel Brodie, and silk design by Basil Twist.
American Modern Opera Company's Run AMOC* festival at Lincoln Center's Summer for the City continues this week with Zarabanda Variations. Conceived by Keir GoGwilt, the performance combines Baroque, folkloric, and contemporary music of the American hemisphere. The performance will feature compositions by Natalia Arroyo, Vicente Atria, Keir GoGwilt, Kyle Motl, and Wilfrido Terrazas, as well as poetry by Edgar Garcia.
Dance company Pilobolus’ Joyce Theatre residency also continues this week. The company presents Other Worlds Collection, featuring the New York City premiere of Flight, created by Renée Jaworski and Matt Kent in collaboration with Connor Chaparro, Hannah Klinkman, Darren Robinson, and Jessica Robling. The performances will also include Pilobolus' interpretation of Martha Graham's Lamentation, and more works from the company's repertory.
The Limón Dance Company’s summer dance classes return to Bryant Park. Dancers from the company will give a free modern dance class the morning of July 5 on the lawn of Bryant Park. The class is open to all ages and experience levels.
