The stage production has a book by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa (Spider-Man, American Psycho) and a score by Tony Award-winning songwriters Tom Kitt and Brian Yorkey (If/Then, Next to Normal).
Instead of a literal screen-to-stage adaptation, the writers have conceived the musical as a prequel to the two popular film comedies about male strippers. The film starred Channing Tatum in the title role. The musical will chart Mike's origin story from struggling college student Mike Lane to his evolution into hunky stripper Magic Mike.
Last spring a reading of the first act featured Derek Klena as Mike and Benjamin Walker as Dallas.
The Nov. 20 reading featured Curt Hansen as Mike and Tony nominee Will Swenson as Dallas. Hamilton cast members Christopher Jackson and Jon Rua, as well as Nick Adams, Steel Burkhardt and Nikki Bohne.
A director is not yet attached to the project. The creative team is reportedly fast-tracking the show to Broadway, but a target season has not been set.
