The Piccadilly Theatre, tucked in behind Piccadilly Circus, has been announced as the venue, with previews set to start May 19 (official opening night is scheduled for June 1).
The show will follow Jailhouse Rock — The Musical into the venue, which will close on April 2 before reopening at the Albery Theatre in May. Booking for Guys and Dolls opens at 10 AM on Friday, Jan. 7.
McGregor will play hunky gambler Sky Masterson, and Jane Krakowski is in talks to co-star (though she has yet to sign on the dotted line). McGregor last appeared on the West End stage in 1999, when he starred in David Halliwell’s Little Malcolm and His Struggle Against the Eunuchs at the Comedy Theatre. Although he’s never braved a singing role onstage, he did warble on film, in the cult hit “Moulin Rouge.”
The show is a Donmar Warehouse production — Grandage is the company’s artistic director — the first they’ve originated outside their tiny Covent Garden base. But Grandage is increasingly ubiquitous in the West End proper. Guys and Dolls will open a mere three weeks after another Grandage production, Schiller’s Don Carlos starring Derek Jacobi (previewing Jan. 28), is scheduled to quit the Gielgud. If Carlos extends, Grandage will have two West End shows running concurrently, alongside his various stagings at the Donmar itself.
