After acquiring the title earlier this year, Music Theatre International has released Evil Dead The Musical for licensing. The musical is now available for productions worldwide, with certain regional and international restrictions.
Adapted from the cult classic film franchise, the musical features a book and lyrics by George Reinblatt; music by Frank Cipolla, Christopher Bond, Melissa Morris, and Reinblatt; additional lyrics by Bond; and additional music by Rob Daleman.
The campy musical mixes elements from both The Evil Dead and Evil Dead 2 for a comedic—and bloody—experience. The story follows five college students in an abandoned cabin in the woods who become transformed into demons after accidentally unleashing an evil force. Ash, a demon-killing hero, is tasked with saving the day with his trusty chainsaw.
The work premiered with a short developmental run in Toronto in 2003, playing Montreal's Just For Laughs Comedy Festival the following year. An Off-Broadway premiere came in 2006, after which the musical played Las Vegas, a national tour, and regional theatres nationwide. A cast album was released in 2007. The musical was previously licensed by Dramatic Publishing Company, who also offered a high school version of the script.
