Douglas Taurel's solo play The American Soldier will make an Off-Broadway bow at A.R.T./New York December 2-21, opening December 4. The work comes to New York after a U.S. tour of more than 34 cities, including three engagements at the Kennedy Center.
The work, both written and performed by Taurel, explores the impacts of war. The performance sees Taurel playing 14 men, women, and children, including mothers and sons coping with the absence of a deployed father, soliders dealing with the loss of a limb, grieving mothers, shell-shocked veterans, and more. Taurel hopes the work is apolitical, instead honoring veterans and their families.
The work was nominated for the Amnesty International Award, and was previously developed at 59E59.
The production features scenic design by Josh Iacovelli, lighting design by Katy Atwell, sound design by Andy Evan Cohen, projection design by Iacovelli and Cohen, and direction by Padraic Lillis.
