Regional News Dave Malloy's Octet, The Matchmaker, More in Hudson Valley Shakespeare's 2025 Season

The upcoming season will be the company's final under the tent before moving into its new home.

Hudson Valley Shakespeare has revealed its 2025 season, the company's final under the tent before moving into a brand new, permanent space that's currently under construction.

Amanda Dehnert will direct a new staging of Dave Malloy's chamber choir musical Octet, with dates to be announced. The work—scored for an a cappella choir and featuring a libretto inspired by online comment sections, scientific debates, religious texts, and Sufi poetry—explores the intersection between 21st-century technology and addiction and nihilism. The work made its world premiere at Off-Broadway's Signature Theatre in 2019. HVS's production is being produced by special arrangement with Plate Spinner Productions, which may hint at further plans for the work on other stages.

The company will also stage a revival of Thornton Wilder's The Matchmaker, the play that became the source material of Hello, Dolly! Nance Williamson and Kurt Rhoads will star as Dolly Levi and Horace Vandergelder, respectively, with Artistic Director Davis McCallum at the helm. Alex Bechtel is composing music.

A new Work-in-Progress Solo Musical with a book by Bryce Pinkham and Zack Fine and music and lyrics by Rona Siddiqui (A Strange Loop) will perform as part of the company's HVS Cabaret, which presents in-development, intimate musical pieces. The work, co-created and featuring dramaturgy by Kirya Traber, will perform August 6-9, 2025. Fine is directing.

The season's Shakespeare offerings will be The Comedy of Errors, directed by Ryan Quinn; and an educational production of Julius Caesar, directed by Raz Golden and running September 15-October 10, 2025.

Dates and further casting for the repertory season are to be announced. Visit HVShakespeare.org.
