Concord Theatricals has acquired worldwide English licensing rights to Selina Fillinger's POTUS: Or, Behind Every Great Dumbass Are Seven Women Trying to Keep Him Alive, which will be licensed through the company's Samuel French imprint. The title is currently available for performance by professional theatres in North America.
The work, a 2019 selection for the Killroys' List, is a modern farce centered on a PR nightmare that befalls the White House as seven women, mostly support staff, risk everything to keep the commander-in-chief out of trouble. The work served as the Broadway debut for 28 year-old Fillinger, whose screenwriting credits include The Morning Show.
"I wrote a comedy about a tragedy, because in our ongoing fight against systemic oppression and minority rule, there are few tools more powerful than the laugh of recognition," says Fillinger in a statement. "When a theatre is brimming with cheers and laughter, we recognize that we are not alone. We realize we are powerful. We are reminded that although the struggle for equality is long, it can also be joyful, gleeful, and full of heart."
"POTUS is arguably one of the smartest, freshest comedies that has played Broadway in recent memory," adds Concord VP of Acquisitions and Artistic Development Amy Rose Marsh. "Selina has penned a female-driven crowd pleaser that deftly captures the experiences of women in the workplace. It’s truly a modern farce."
Tony winner Susan Stroman directed the play's Broadway bow, which opened at the Shubert Theatre April 27 starring Tony winner Julie White, Tony nominees Lilli Cooper and Vanessa Williams, Lea DeLaria, Rachel Dratch, Julianne Hough, and Suzy Nakamura. Dratch and White received 2022 Tony Award nominations for their performances.
