Broadway's Oh, Mary! has added some additional star power to the upcoming Jane Krakowski administration, set to begin performances at the Lyceum Theatre beginning October 14. Playing opposite Krakowski's Mary Todd Lincoln will be Emmy nominee Cheyenne Jackson (Julie and the Phantoms) as Mary's Teacher and Tony nominee John-Andrew Morrison (A Strange Loop) will be Mary's Husband. Further casting is to be announced.
The show revealed both bits of casting on social media.
Cole Escola's demented comedy currently stars Jinkx Monsoon in the title role, opposite Kumail Nanjiani as Mary's Husband, Michael Urie as Mary's Teacher, Jenn Harris as Mary's Chaperone, and Martin Landry as Mary's Husband's Assistant. That cast is confirmed to perform through September 28. For performances September 30-October 12, the play will star Hannah Solow as Mary, Phillip James Brannon as Mary's Husband, and original cast member James Scully as Mary's Teacher.
Also newly revealed: Harris will remain with the company for Krakowski's tenure, and original cast member Tony Macht will return as Mary's Husband's Assistant November 18.
Oh, Mary! centers on Mary Todd Lincoln in the weeks leading up to the assassination of Abraham Lincoln. In Escola's demented take (or as press notes put it, "through the lens of an idiot"), Mary Todd becomes a madcap, cabaret-obsessed alcoholic.
The piece premiered at Off-Broadway's Lucille Lortel Theatre in 2024 in a run that was extended three times. It then opened on Broadway last summer, where it's been breaking box-office records at the Lyceum Theatre; it became the first show in the theatre’s 121-year history to gross more than $1,000,000 in a single week.
The show earned two 2025 Tony Awards: Lead Actor in a Play for Escola (who departed the production in June) and Director of a Play for Sam Pinkleton.
The play's understudies are Solow, Julian Manjerico, Sean Peter Forte, and Jackie Sanders.
