English Touring Theatre, Leeds Playhouse, and Rose Theatre's touring production of Oscar Wilde’s The Importance of Being Earnest officially opens September 8 at the Leeds Playhouse following previews that began September 5.
Directed by Denzel Westley-Sanderson, performances continue through September 17. The tour will subsequently play Cambridge Arts Theatre, New Wolsey Theatre, Northern Stage, and Liverpool Playhouse before culminating at Rose Theatre November 12.
The satire features Phoebe Campbell as Cecily, Valentine Hanson as Merriman/Lane, Joanne Henry as Miss Prism, Daniel Jacob as Lady Bracknell, Adele James as Gwendolen, Abiola Owokoniran as Algernon Moncrieff, Anita Reynolds as Dr. Chasuble, and Justice Ritchie as John Worthing.
Wilde’s The Importance of Being Earnest follows Jack Worthing’s endeavors to marry the beautiful Gwendolen. The classic farce looks at the clash between town and country in a story of romance, identity, and social obligations.
The production also has designs by Lily Arnold, lighting design by Zoe Spurr, sound design by Beth Duke, movement direction by Tinovimbanashe Sibanda, and assistant direction by Becca Chadder. The dramaturg is Phillippe Cato and casting is by Bryony Jarvis Taylor.
