A Kickstarter campaign has launched to raise the funds needed to produce an original cast recording of Dave Malloy's a capella chamber choir musical, Octet. The new musical, now in performances at Off-Broadway's Signature Theatre, continues its acclaimed, extended run through June 30.
The cast recording will be produced by Signature. Click here to view the Kickstarter.
The world premiere of Octet is directed by Annie Tippe. The musical features a score for an a cappella chamber choir and a libretto inspired by Internet comment boards, scientific debates, religious texts, and Sufi poetry to explore addiction and nihilism within the messy context of 21st-century technology.
The new musical, which began performances April 23 ahead of a May 19 opening, features a company made up of Adam Bashian, Kim Blanck, Starr Busby, Alex Gibson, Justin Gregory Lopez, J.D. Mollison, Margo Seibert, and Kuhoo Verma. Jonathan Christopher and Nicole Weiss are understudies.
The creative team is made up of Or Matias (music supervision and music direction), Amy Rubin and Brittany Vasta (scenic design), Brenda Abbandandolo (costume design), Christopher Bowser (lighting design), and Hidenori Nakajo (sound design). The production stage manager is Jhanaë Bonnick, and casting is by David Caparelliotis.
Octet is the first production in Malloy’s Signature Residency, which will include three productions over the course of five years.
