Industry News Broadway Grosses Analysis: Thanksgiving Week Delivers Broadway's Highest Box Office of 2022

Funny Girl enjoyed the highest-grossing week of its run even as star Lea Michele was sidelined.

No "turkeys" on Broadway last week as Thanksgiving week delivered the highest grosses of 2022 across all 33 currently running productions: $37,475,773. The sum is the largest cumulative gross from the Main Stem since the week ending January 5, 2020, a pre-pandemic holiday week that brought in $43 million.

One of this week's big winners was Funny Girl, which has continued to see receipts soar with Glee star Lea Michele leading the company—except the revival turned in its highest-performing week of its run even as Michele was sidelined for two performances (standby Julie Benko, who has proved a fan favorite, took the stage in her absence). The musical brought in $1,885,103.60 with an average ticket price of $209.46—the third-highest average ticket of the week—and played to 92.29%-full houses.

And, it turns out The Phantom of the Opera's decision to postpone closing night on Broadway may be a lucrative one; the production blew even its recent success out of the water last week, bringing in $2.24 million. The sum is the highest gross in the production's entire almost-35-year run, beating a 2017 production record of $2.15 million.

MJ also continues its success at the Neil Simon Theatre, where the jukebox biomusical broke the house record for the ninth time with a total of $1,958,177, putting the show "dangerous"ly close to joining the $2 million club.

The Music Man remained in the No. 1 spot, bringing in $2.87 million—to say nothing of the six-figure Broadway Cares donation the production generated via a certain audience A-lister—with The Lion KingHamiltonWicked, and The Phantom of the Opera filling out the rest of the top five.
