Two Broadway legends will make posthumous onscreen appearances in the upcoming film sequel to Knives Out, Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery: Angela Lansbury and Stephen Sondheim. The film is due to see a limited theatrical release beginning November 23 and will stream on Netflix from December 23.
It remains unclear how Sondheim and Lansbury will figure into the murder mystery, though both will be appearing as themselves. The film was reportedly shot from June–September 2021.
Both considered theatrical royalty, Sondheim and Lansbury were not infrequent collaborators, most successfully on the original Broadway production of Sondheim's Sweeney Todd, which earned Lansbury a Tony Award for her performance as Mrs. Lovett. She had previously created the role of Cora Hoover Hooper in Sondheim's Anyone Can Whistle and sang his lyrics starring as Rose in the first Broadway revival of Gyspy, later playing Madame Armfeldt in a Broadway revival of A Little Night Music as well.
Sondheim died November 26, 2021, at the age of 91, and Lansbury died October 11 at 96. Glass Onion will be the final onscreen credit for both.
The sequel sees Broadway alum Daniel Craig reprising his role as Detective Benoit Blanc, who is investigating a new case in Greece. Co-starring are fellow Broadway alums Leslie Odom Jr. (Hamilton) and Kathryn Hahn (Boeing-Boeing), and Edward Norton, Janelle Monáe, Jessica Henwick, Madelyn Cline, Kate Hudson, and Dave Bautista.
The first Knives Out movie, which starred notable Broadway players Christopher Plummer, Michael Shannon, Chris Evans, and Toni Collette, was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay (Johnson); three Golden Globe Awards, including Best Motion Picture (Musical and Comedy); and two Hollywood Critics Association Awards, winning one for Best Cast.
