On Your Feet!'s Ana Villafañe has been cast in the upcoming movie Alina of Cuba: La Hija Rebelde. Deadline reports she will play Alina Fernandez, Fidel Castro's daughter.
The biopic has set Miguel Bardem as the director and is expected to begin filming this summer in Colombia. It will follow the real-life story of Fernandez and her human rights advocacy, including her outspokenness against Castro's communist leadership.
The movie will feature a script by Oscar nominee Jose Rivera and Pulitzer Prize winner Nilo Cruz (Anna in the Tropics). Allen Gilmer will serve as the executive producer, alongside producers John Martinez O’Felan, Joe Lamy, Celine Rattray, Trudie Styler, and Allen Gilmer.
Villafañe made her Broadway debut as Gloria Estefan in the original Broadway cast of On Your Feet!, which premiered in 2018. Other roles include playing Nina Rosario in the Kennedy Center’s In the Heights and starring as Roxie Hart in Chicago's Broadway reopening, following the COVID-19 shutdown.
Villafañe has made appearance in the TV series Sunnyside and Younger. She is also slated to star in the upcoming Apple TV+ series Bad Monkey.
