An industry presentation of Jason Ma's new musical Hua Mulan, inspired by the legendary fifth century Chinese folk heroine, is presented in Manhattan November 7 at Pearl Studios.
Co-directed by Billy Bustamante and Chongren Fan, the cast is led by The Phantom of the Opera's Ali Ewoldt as Madam Hua and Maybe Happy Ending’s Claire Kwon as Mulan.
The duo is joined by Liz Casasola, Emy Coligado, Alex Humphreys, Steven Huynh, Jimmy Nguyen, Elijah V. Ramos, Sam Simahk, Bebe Browning, Andrew Cristi, Emily Song Tyler, Viet Vo, and Haoyi Wen with stage directions read by Victoria Pommalath.
Hua Mulan explores the origin of the mythic woman warrior in fifth century China—a 10-year-old girl who, after struggling to find herself in a world of men, becomes a legendary hero, immortalized for the ages.
The creative team also includes music director Minhui Lee, assistant director Haoyi Wen, and stage manager Merrick Williams.
This presentation is produced by Yangtze Repertory Theatre, whose 2023 production of Salesman之死 was awarded an Obie for Outstanding New Play.
