Once On This Island will be staged as a one-night-only concert on the West End on February 8 at Theatre Royal Drury Lane. Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty's beloved musical most recently ran on Broadway in 2018 in a critically acclaimed production with Tony winner Alex Newell starring as Asaka.
Newell will return to the role for the staged concert, alongside Dujonna Gift (Two Strangers…) as Ti Moune, Melanie La Barrie (& Juliet) as Papa Ge, and Cedric Neal (Guys & Dolls) as Agwe.
They will be joined onstage by Jamael Westman as Daniel Beauxhomme, Casey Al-Shaqsy as Andrea Deveraux, Waylon Jacobs as Armand Beauxhomme, Ako Mitchell as Tonton Julian, and Wendy Mae Brown as Mama Euralie. The ensemble will include Elliot Broadfoot, Jerome Lincoln, Lindo Shinda and Tamara Tare, with further casting to be announced soon.
“Playing Asaka is like stepping into pure sunlight—she lives in my bones, loud and loving, wise and wild, and absolutely unafraid. Every time I return to her, it feels like reconnecting with a part of myself that refuses to dim," said Newell in a statement. "After performing Pippin at Theatre Royal Drury Lane, I fell head-over-heels for London’s audiences—their open hearts, their contagious energy, their willingness to go on a ride with you from the very first note. Coming back to this city feels like being welcomed by an old friend who never forgot you. I can’t wait to shake the stage again, to fill it with laughter and power and color, and to pour every ounce of myself into a character who has given me so much.”
Once On This Island was nominated for nine 2018 Tony Awards, winning for Best Revival of a Musical. The musical, featuring a book and lyrics by Tony winner Lynn Ahrens and music by Tony winner Stephen Flaherty, is based on the novel My Love, My Love by Rosa Guy. Annabel Mutale-Reed will direct the staged concert, with music direction and conducting by Jordan Li-Smith, sound design by Harry Greatorex, and casting by Ben Armstrong Casting. The London Musical Theatre Orchestra will perform live in accompaniment.
