The new musical A Letter to Harvey Milk is set to debut Off-Broadway this winter at Theatre Row’s Acorn Theatre. Set in San Francisco in 1986, the story follows two unlikely people brought together by a letter penned to Harvey Milk, the first openly gay elected politician in California.

A Letter to Harvey Milk is based on the short story of the same titled by Lesléa Newman. The musical features lyrics by Ellen M. Schwartz, with additional lyrics by Cheryl Stern, music by Laura I. Kramer, book by Jerry James, Schwartz, Stern and Kramer. Evan Pappas directs.

Performances are set to begin February 21, 2018, ahead of a March 6 opening night. Casting and a full creative team will be announced at a later date.

In A Letter to Harvey Milk, Harry, a widower and retired kosher butcher finds an unexpected alliance with Barbara, his young lesbian teacher at the senior center. The musical deals with issues of friendship, grief, and self-acceptance.
