Insider Info 5 Broadway Shows to See Starring Primetime Emmy Winners

Many of your favorite TV stars are currently lighting up Broadway plays and musicals.

Okay, TV and theatre lovers. It's time to get off the couch and catch a Broadway show featuring one (or more) of your favorite Primetime Emmy-winning stars. Yes, Broadway is currently filled with actors who have brought home TV's top honor, many who also have an equally impressive theatrical resume that have earned them one, if not two Tony Awards.

From dramatic heavyweights to comedic icons, many of these stars are playing roles that showcase their range in ways TV audiences don't often get to see. And there are no cuts, no retakes, just thrilling performances.

Don't pass up this chance to see one or more of these stars live and in person. It's definitely the time to trade that remote for a Playbill and rediscover the many joys of live theatre.

Danny Burstein and Cynthia Nixon in Marjorie Prime Joan Marcus

Cynthia Nixon in Marjorie Prime

Cynthia Nixon won an Emmy Award for her work as the career-driven Miranda Hobbes in the long-running series Sex and the City; she also recently reprised the role in the show's sequel, And Just Like That. In the latter, Miranda confronted aging and identity, leaving her husband and the corporate world behind, eventually finding love with her colleague and girlfriend Joy. Nixon can also be seen on the HBO Max series The Gilded Age.

Now, Nixon has an equally transformative journey in the Broadway play Marjorie Prime, which movingly and somewhat eerily explores how AI technology might be used during the grief process. Nixon, a two-time Tony winner for her work in Rabbit Hole and The Little Foxes, is joined on stage by a stellar company that also includes veteran actress June Squibb (who made her Broadway debut in the original production of Gypsy), Tony winner Danny Burstein (Moulin Rouge! The Musical), and Christopher Lowell (How I Met Your Father). Anne Kauffman directs the Broadway premiere of Jordan Harrison's drama, a 2015 Pulitzer Prize finalist during its original Off-Broadway run.

Laurie Metcalf and Micah Stock in Little Bear Ridge Road Julieta Cervantes

Laurie Metcalf in Little Bear Ridge Road

Laurie Metcalf won three Emmy Awards for her work as Jackie on the long-running TV series Roseanne (and its eventual rebranding as The Conners). Metcalf was a standout as Roseanne's quirky, insecure younger sister—imbuing the eccentric character with emotional complexity.

Metcalf has brought a similar depth to all her work, including her Tony-winning performances in Three Tall Women and A Doll's House, Part 2, as well as her current role as the no-nonsense nurse Sarah in Little Bear Ridge Road. The play, which marks the Broadway debut of The Whale playwright Samuel D. Hunter, allows Metcalf the chance to demonstrate both her comedic and dramatic chops, often within a single moment. The thoroughly moving play, which follows the complicated relationship between Sarah and her struggling nephew Ethan (Micah Stock, in a welcome Broadway return), also features fine work from John Drea and Meighan Gerachis, both making their Broadway debuts. Tony winner Joe Mantello directs this intimate gem of a production, which continues through December 21.

James Corden, Neil Patrick Harris, and Bobby Cannavale in Art Matthew Murphy

Neil Patrick Harris, James Corden, and Bobby Cannavale in Art

Neil Patrick Harris may best be known for his roles as teen prodigy Doogie Howser, M.D. and the suit-loving womanizer Barney Stinson on How I Met Your Mother, but the stage and screen star earned four of his five Emmy Awards for his work hosting the annual Tony Awards (his fifth Emmy is for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series on the high school-set musical series Glee). And, now, the stage and screen star is back on Broadway—part of a sensational trio that also includes 12-time (!) Emmy winner James Corden (also an Emmy-winning Tony host, plus The Late Late Show with James Corden, Carpool Karaoke, James Corden's Next Corden) and two-time Emmy winner Bobby Cannavale (Boardwalk Empire, Will & Grace).

The Emmy-winning trio are leading the hit revival of Yasmina Reza's Tony-winning comedy Art at the Music Box Theatre. Harris' uptight Serge is the catalyst for the shenanigans that follow his extremely expensive purchase of a nearly all-white painting. The Scott Ellis-directed production also features a show-stopping monologue from comedic giant Corden, though it is the chemistry among the three stars that create such a memorable evening in the theatre. These actors, it should be noted, have also been Tony-recognized: Harris won the 2014 Tony for his performance in the title role of Hedwig and the Angry Inch, Corden won a 2012 Tony in the British import One Man, Two Guvnors, and Cannavale was Tony-nominated in 2008 and 2011 for his performances in, respectively, Mauritius and The Motherf*cker With the Hat. With so many accolades between them, these three men definitely know something about art!

Darren Criss in Maybe Happy Ending Matthew Murphy and Evan Zimmerman

Darren Criss in Maybe Happy Ending

It's been some year for Darren Criss, who not only won his first Tony Award at the 2025 ceremony, he won two! Criss earned the 2025 Tony for Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Musical for his performance as Oliver in the new musical Maybe Happy Ending, and also picked up another for co-producing the production, which was named Best Musical. Maybe Happy Ending has been the little-musical-that could, consistently building audiences until it became the most Tony-honored musical of the season, with six Tonys in all. Criss, a 2018 Emmy winner for his performance as serial killer Andrew Cunanan in American Crime Story: The Assassination of Gianni Versace, shares the stage of the Belasco with Broadway newcomer Helen J Shen, both playing robots on the edge of obsolescence. One of the most visually exciting new musicals, the Michael Arden-directed Maybe Happy Ending is also an extremely moving experience, exploring the universal need to be useful and the overwhelming desire to find love.
