During the conference, which runs June 23–July 13, each musical will undergo the O’Neill’s signature development process, employing professional creative and support staff, including directors, music directors, dramaturgs, performers, and orchestrators, to bring these new works to life.
The three new musicals that will be developed were selected from 287 submissions: The Family Resemblance with book, lyrics, and music by Masi Asare; Teeth with book and lyrics by Michael R. Jackson and music by Anna K. Jacobs; and Eddie the Marvelous, Who Will Save the World with book, music, and lyrics by Kate Kilbane and Dan Moses.
Carousel’s Alexander Gemignani, artistic director of the National Music Theater Conference, told Playbill, “I am thrilled to welcome Masi, Michael, Anna, Dan, and Kate to the 2018 National Music Theater Conference this summer. These writers embody the high level of craft and bold story-telling I was hoping would rise to the top of the vast submission pool. I am ecstatic to spend time with these exceptional artists and look forward to supporting and nurturing the development of their work.”
Since its founding in 1978, the National Music Theater Conference has developed more than 120 new musicals, including early works of Lin-Manuel Miranda, Tom Kitt, Andrew Lippa, Tan Dun, Robert Lopez, Duncan Sheik, Kirsten Childs, Adam Gwon, Steven Sater, Kristen Anderson-Lopez, Maury Yeston, and Jeanine Tesori.
Casting and creative teams will be announced in the coming weeks.
