Roundabout Theatre Company’s revival of She Loves Me leads the nominations for the 61st Annual Drama Desk Awards, which are being given June 5 in New York. The awards consider Broadway and Off-Broadway shows together.
She Loves Me has nine nominations overall, followed by American Psycho and Bright Star with eight and seven nominations, respectively.
Shuffle Along and First Daughter Suite both earned six nominations apiece. Shuffle was nominated for Best Musical, Best Choreography and four technical awards, but none of its stars was nominated.
In the Best Play category, three of the five nominees were produced Off-Broadway; only The Humans and King Charles III were done on Broadway.
Broadway powerhouse Hamilton was not eligible this year, having been considered for its original Off-Broadway run in 2015.
The category of Outstanding Book of a Musical was dropped at first when an insufficient number was deemed award-worthy, but then restored after an outcry from the Dramatists Guild and others.
The 61st Annual Drama Desk Awards ceremony, hosted by Michael Urie, is being held at The Town Hall. The Drama Desk Awards, which are presented annually, honor outstanding achievement by professional theatre artists on Broadway, Off-Broadway and Off-Off Broadway. The awards are voted on and bestowed by theatre critics, journalists, editors and publishers covering theatre.
Joey Parnes Productions produces and manages the awards show. Gretchen Shugart is the managing executive producer of the Drama Desk Awards. The awards show is written by Bill Rosenfield and directed by Jack Cummings III (co-founder and artistic director of Transport Group).
Tony and Drama Desk-nominated stage and screen stars Vanessa Williams and Matthew Morrison announced the nominations April 28.
