Playwrights Robert Icke and Duncan Macmillan are working on a 1984 TV series, based on their stage adaptation of Geroge Orwell’s dystopian novel that played Broadway and London’s West End.
Deadline reports Wiip, which produces Apple TV+’s Dickinson, is planning to present the story as a five-part limited series. Icke and Macmillan are set to executive produce alongside Wiip’s Paul Lee and David Flynn, the latter also serving as showrunner.
“The small screen feels like a natural home for [Orwell’s] portrait of a society in which people trust their screens more than the world outside their windows,” said Icke and Macmillan.
The pair’s take on 1984 premiered at Nottingham Playhouse in 2013 before transferring the following year to London, where it played four engagements. The production then opened on Broadway in 2017.
