A host of stage favorites received Emmy Award nominations July 12 for their work on the small screen.
Among the 2018 nominees are Broadway and Glee alum Darren Criss, up for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited Series or Movie for FX’s The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story. Joining him in the category are Broadway-bound Tony nominee Jeff Daniels for The Looming Tower (also nominated for Godless), Tony nominee Antonio Banderas for Genius: Picasso, Benedict Cumberbatch for Patrick Melrose, Jesse Plemons for Black Mirror’s “USS Callister,” and John Legend for his title performance in Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert.
In addition to Legend, Tony nominees Brandon Victor Dixon and Sara Bareilles earned nods for their performances as Judas and Mary Magdalene, respectively, in Jesus Christ Superstar. The three are the first performers to receive nominations for the recent wave of live musical broadcasts. The broadcast garnered ten additional nominations, including Outstanding Variety Special (Live), Outstanding Costumes for Variety Programming for Tony winner Paul Tazewell, and Outstanding Directing for a Limited Series (Movie or Dramatic Special) for David Leveaux and Alex Rudzinski.
Should Oscar, Tony, and Grammy winner Legend win, he would complete his EGOT pursuit; an Outstanding Variety Special win for Jesus Christ Superstar would deliver the coveted quadruple-feat to writers Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice, who served as executive producers.
