Cynthia Erivo, who won a Tony Award last year for her leading performance in The Color Purple, has landed a leading role in the thriller Bad Times at the El Royale. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the film is eyeing to begin production in January 2018.
Erivo will play a struggling singer amid a group of characters in a run-down Lake Tahoe hotel.
The 20th Century Fox project will feature a script by Drew Goddard, who also produces. Chris Hemsworth, Jeff Bridges, and newcomer Cailee Spaeny are also set to star.
Following the 2015 revival of The Color Purple, Erivo boarded the upcoming film Widows, which will mark her feature debut; the cast also includes Tony and Oscar winner Viola Davis and Broadway alum André Holland. She will also play Harriet Tubman in the upcoming biopic Harriet.
