Tony and Emmy nominee Carrie Coon will take on the title role in the New York premiere of Mary Jane, penned by Pulitzer Prize finalist Amy Herzog and directed by two-time Obie winner Anne Kauffman.
The production will kick off New York Theatre Workshop's 2017–18 season, with performances set to begin at the Off-Broadway venue September 6. It is scheduled to run through October 15 with an opening night set for September 25.
In addition to Coon (Fargo, The Leftovers, Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?), the cast will include Liza Colón-Zayas (Between Riverside and Crazy), Danaya Esperanza (Men on Boats), Susan Pourfar (Tribes), and Brenda Wehle (The Crucible).
The play takes place over a rain-drenched summer in New York City and follows a single mother—Mary Jane—navigating life caring for a sick child.
The production will feature scenic design by Laura Jellinek (The Light Years), costume design by Emily Rebholz (Dear Evan Hansen), lighting design by Japhy Weideman (Charlie and the Chocolate Factory), and sound design by Leah Gelpe (Sundown, Yellow Moon). Lisa Chernoff (Oslo) will be Stage Manager.
Mary Jane is produced in association with Yale Repertory Theatre, where it was commissioned and received its world premiere in April 2017.
Based on the 1985 film, the musical centers on teenager Marty McFly when he is accidentally transported back to 1955 in a time-traveling DeLorean invented by Dr. Emmett Brown.
