Gore Vidal, the prolific man of letters who produced dozens of novels, memoirs, plays, essays and screenplays, and was a voluble and unrestrained cultural commentator, died July 31, 2012 at his home in Los Angeles. He was 86. The cause was complications from pneumonia.
