Mastering the Elements:The Five Sentence Story

Instructor: Steven San Luis (NYC)

Cost: $40
Capacity: 12 (will run with 6)

Age/Experience: All ages / No experience needed!

Location: Digitally Via GoogleMeet

Dates/Times

February 15th from 3 to 7 pm via GoogleMeet from your home!

From the Instructor: One of my favorite writing exercises is to write a story with a character, a character motivation, a character action, and a cathartic ending, all in five short sentences. Every one of my full-length plays (as well as my one acts that have been produced in festivals all over the country) have begun as a five sentence story jotted down in my green notebook. The Five Sentence Story is helpful for anyone who is just beginning to brainstorm a story as well as those who are multiple revisions deep. Every pop culture movie, tv show, novel, or (my favorite) work of theater can be boiled down and told in this method. It is essential for writers trying to master structure, and it is an art form unto itself.

In this workshop you will:

-Learn the Five Sentence Story structure

-Deconstruct our favorite pop culture stories into the basic Five Sentence structure

-Write 10 Five Sentence Stories

-Pick one Five Sentence Story to revise/edit

-Learn the formal tools that make your story unique

-Learn how to turn your Five Sentence Story into a full length work

Monologue Workshop: Finding Texture through Psychophysical Gesture
Instructor: Sylvie Tamar (NYC/London)
Cost: $40

Capacity: 14 (will run with 6)

Age/Experience: 16+ / No Experience necessary

Location: Digitally Via GoogleMeet

Dates/Times

February 22nd from 11 am - 2 pm MST via GoogleMeet from your home.

Michael Chekhov’s technique, Psychophysical Gesture, has become a mainstay in my acting practice. Once you have identified your character’s Objective (what they want), and Tactic (how they will try to affect the other person to get it), the psychophysical gesture can help bring that tactic to life in a non-literal way. By working through the gesture with sound, then text, then leaving the gesture to bubble underneath as you deliver the text, your character’s inner world appears without forcing. This workshop is for anyone who has felt they are “just saying words” arbitrarily, and are looking for more specificity and intention in their scenework/monologues. Each participant will have a chance to work 1:1 on their monologue, using Psychophysical Gestures and Tactics to bring further texture and dynamic into their work.

Participants will bring in a 1 to 1.5-minute monologue of their choice (or can have one

assigned). If needing a monologue assigned, please note that in your registration email with your age range, gender identity and type of roles you go out for typically.
