BREAKDOWN

"Untitled" Summer Show 2026

San Francisco Mime Troupe casting and process statement

For 66 years, the Tony Award-winning San Francisco Mime Troupe has prided itself on the topicality of its original plays. Especially for our annual “Free Shows in the Parks” each summer, our plays are not completed until rehearsal begins. This allows us to stay current with the ever-changing news and events that affect us all and the world in which we live. This is especially true this year as the news updates are continuous! This is the reason that no cast of characters is listed on our audition notices. It is because the characters have yet to be written!

We are seeking 4 actors. Performers will likely play multiple roles and must be able to execute rapid costume and character changes and must be able to work outdoors for large audiences.

Nevertheless, there is a similarity to our cast of characters from year to year. They are intergenerational, racially and culturally diverse and reflect the various socio-economic classes that make up our society, and we have no gender bias. SFMT has been “blind casting” for decades unless the character is specifically identified. Stylistically, we are based in the traditions of Popular Theater forms such as Commedia, Melodrama with broad, larger than life characterizations. We employ familiar genres, sci-fi, noir, westerns etc. We also have a large musical component to each play with original songs and score.

When looking to cast we ask that our actors be extremely versatile, able to sing and move freely with a good comic sense. Our shows are fast paced and with a small cast playing multiple characters, quick changes are usually required.

Since we perform outdoors in front of large audiences, it is extremely important to be able to project their voice enough to override any other ambient sounds that are inevitable. For more information, please visit our website www.sfmt.org to learn more about our long history and us.
