Breakdown

THE OUTSIDERS (Broadway)

The sound of The Outsiders is a blend of folk, soul, southern rock, blues, with some elements of early country, hints
of bluegrass and church revival. This is not a twangy score, no strong accents needed, not a hoedown or a
hootenanny, but more of a celebration of Americana, traditions around acoustically driven, sincere, soulful, visceral
human expression. Authenticity is key, as this should not feel like something put on, but the truest expression of
these characters' emotional lives. For these reasons, we are interested in unique and eclectic voices to comprise
our company. For some stylistic references, here is a playlist featuring artists such as Bonnie Raitt, The Band, Bill
Withers, and more.

SYNOPSIS: THE OUTSIDERS is a story about class, broken homes, protecting one’s turf, and the all-too-real
American condition known as the “Haves and Have Nots.” It is a world of kids of every sort, from destitute outlaws,
gas station workers, and high school dropouts (the Greasers), to the very well-appointed, college-bound, and
wealthy (the Socs). This is Tulsa 1967, where to be a Soc means to be rich and white. To be a Greaser is to be
poor, rejected by the Haves because of any number of facets: economic status, gender identity, race, sexual
orientation, ethnicity and any other facet that Tulsa Soc Society deems as "other". The Greasers are a group of
boys who have created a chosen family that reflects the true diversity of Tulsa.

SEEKING (For future replacements):

GREASERS/MALE & FEMALE PRESENTING ENSEMBLE & SWINGS- All vocal types, real people with Americana/Rock sound, to play Greasers & other featured parts. Must be able to execute athletic movement and fight choreography. The Greasers can be Black, Indigenous, Latine, API, MENASA or Mixed.

SOCS/MALE & FEMALE PRESENTING ENSEMBLE & SWINGS- All vocal types, real people with Americana/Rock sound, to play Socs & other featured parts. Must be able to execute athletic movement and fight choreography. The Socs can be White.

The above may understudy the following principal roles:

PONYBOY CURTIS - 15, A dreamer with a cowboy spirit. Our narrator and a budding writer finding his voice, can
be vulnerable when speaking to the audience. The youngest Greaser and youngest brother of three. Curious,
introspective, a storyteller. Freshly orphaned and raw from the pain. Idolizes Paul Newman in Cool Hand Luke and
his individualism. A natural loner, he finds true friendship with Johnny Cade.

JOHNNY CADE - 16 but looks younger. Black, Indigenous, Latine, API, MENASA or Mixed. Ponyboy’s best friend,
the smallest and most vulnerable of the Greasers. Sensitive and loyal, suffers from PTSD from abuse at home and
on the streets, he has found family in the Greasers. Has a special connection with Dallas Winston, outsiders among
outsiders.

DARREL CURTIS - 20. The oldest Curtis brother. Strong, athletic, intelligent, hardworking, strict. A former golden
boy, his future was ripped away from him after his parents were killed in a tragic accident. Works two roofing jobs
and has taken on the difficult task of raising and providing for his two younger brothers. Trying his best to keep it
together but fraying at the edges under pressure from all sides. Sacrificed his future to give his brothers one.
Incredible potential squashed by circumstance. Had to grow up too fast. Suffers no fools.

DALLAS “DALLY” WINSTON - 19, Black, Indigenous, Latine, API, MENASA or Mixed. Wily, rebellious,
audacious, impulsive, and reckless. Sensual and single minded. Fiercely loyal, brutally honest. The outlier of the
Greasers, originally from New York’s Hell’s Kitchen. Cares deeply for Ponyboy and especially Johnny Cade, sees
him as his little brother.

SODAPOP CURTIS - 17, the middle Curtis brother. Charismatic, exceptionally handsome, and a high-school dropout,
he now works at the local gas station. Ponyboy's security blanket at home. Privately nursing a broken heart but
hides it well and deflects so he doesn't have to take anything too seriously.

SHERRY “CHERRY” VALANCE - 17, white. A dreamer. Confident, privileged, curious, open minded. Has been
conditioned to be what society expects her to be: Bob's Girlfriend and Captain of the Cheerleading team.
Experiences an awakening once she meets Ponyboy and the other Greasers. Finds her courage. Displays
tremendous compassion for the Greasers and Ponyboy in particular. Breaks the mold.

KEITH "TWO-BIT" MATTHEWS - 18, Black, Indigenous, Latine, API, MENASA or Mixed. Strong Dancer. A natural
clown with an infectious sense of humor, extremely loyal to the Greasers and to the Curtis family. One of the best
fighters among the greasers.

BOB - 17/18, white, the leader of the Soc’s, Tulsa Society's golden boy. Cocky, charming, dazzling, a natural
leader. Has the whole world by the tail. Cherry's boyfriend and the captain of the football team. Comes from
extreme privilege, he doesn't take "no" for an answer. Expresses his rage and repressed emotions through violence
and bullying.

PAUL - 20, white, physically intimidating, he was the best receiver on his high school football team and went on to
play college ball. Bob's best friend and 2nd in command. Buries his fears and insecurities under a mask of
confidence and self-assurance. A one-time football teammate of Darrell, he got to have the future Darry dreamed
of. Quiets his own demons by wailing on Greasers.
