DESCRIPTION

The nationally-recognized Douglas Anderson School of the Arts Department of Theatre is currently seeking an engaging and enthusiastic full-time Instructor/Designer for their award-winning Technical Theatre Department.

Candidates will

- Provide hands-on instruction in scenic construction, including best safety practices.

- Teach students the fundamentals of lighting design, hanging & focusing of light plot, and programming of light board.

- Educate on sound design, including audio equipment setup, operation, and live performance mixing.

- Offer expertise in theatrical fabrication & rigging and appropriate safety procedures.

- Instruct students on the use of computer aided drafting and its uses in theatre.

- Mentor and motivate students with a commitment to fostering a positive and engaging learning environment that allows students to explore and take risks.

- Collaborate with technical coordination with the directors, choreographers, designers, and conductors to ensure continuity of productions.

- Perform other duties as assigned by appropriate administrator.

- Serve as Technical Director for Main Stage, Black Box, and other productions (this duty will be shared with other Technical Theatre faculty members and/or contracted artists). This includes technical support for other departments (Instrumental, Vocal, Dance etc) as needed.

Candidates should:

- Demonstrate ability to read, understand and draft theatrical ground plans, construction drawings, lighting plots, sound cue sheets, and other associated paperwork.

- Demonstrate knowledge, training, and skill in organizing, maintaining, and managing facilities and equipment for the performing arts.

- Demonstrate ability to communicate in a timely and professional manner with students, colleagues, parents, boosters, and community partners.

Requirements:

- BA or BFA in Theatre Arts, Design/Production, or related field. Master’s Degree preferred.

- Experience teaching in the arts in a high school or collegiate environment and/or related professional experience in technical direction and/or design/production.

- Willingness to work evenings and weekends periodically based on production schedule.

Starting salary: $48,700. Additional Referendum money is available for the next four years starting at $7730 for the 26-27 school year. Additional supplements are available for candidates with Master’s degrees.

Douglas Anderson School of the Arts is a Grammy-winning public high school located in Jacksonville, Florida. Comprised of three majors: musical, performance (acting) and technical theatre, DA boasts a professional-caliber season of four to five productions annually, plus participation in One-Act Festivals, District Thespian Competitions, Department Showcases, and touring Theatre for Young Audience productions. In addition, the 25-26 season saw DA Theatre recognized by numerous regional and National organizations, including the National YoungArts Foundation, the Foundation for Excellence in Education, the US Department of Education, the NAACP, and the Educational Theatre Association, in addition to 17 alumni appearing on Broadway and/or national tours in 2025.
