For nineteen incredible summers, the Southeastern Summer Theatre Institute has welcomed extraordinary high school theatre students from across the US to beautiful Hilton Head Island, South Carolina for a month-long professional theatre experience that shapes these young people as both performers and people. SSTI’s Tech Education Director is a tone-setting leadership role on the SSTI campus. Serving approximately 15 advanced technical theatre artists per session across six focus areas, this individual designs and oversees a rigorous, personalized educational experience aligned with each participant’s artistic and collegiate goals.
The ideal candidate is highly organized, fluent across a broad range of technical disciplines, experienced in the modern college interview process for BFA-bound designers and technicians, and energized by working deeply with motivated, career-focused young artists. The ideal candidate will have the ability to communicate with the modern student, including a native understanding of modern portfolio and website software, such as Canva, Wix, and the Adobe Suite. The position is supported by a decade of established templates, lecture materials, and documentation, as well as an assistant for large-group instructional sessions.
Specifically, this individual (along with a part-time assistant) will oversee the:
-Designing, coordinating, and overseeing the full technical theatre curriculum, including daily classes, specialty workshops, masterclasses, and project-based learning.
-Preparing and distributing pre-summer educational communications, assignments, and placement surveys to support individualized scheduling, spotlight projects, and departmental readiness.
- Collaborating with production leadership to align educational goals with production needs, including daily student area assignments, run crew assignments, and scheduling considerations.
- Managing the strategic use of an assistant that is available as needed for specifically delegated tasks, larger projects/event days (such as mock interview day or tech for actors day), but otherwise remains a member of the scenic department.
- Leading and supporting instructional staff through educator preparation sessions, class development guidance, and ongoing mentorship throughout the session.
-Overseeing student progress, including spotlight projects, portfolio and resume development, mock interviews, and professional readiness benchmarks.
- In conjunction with the Production Manager, overseeing the planning, scheduling, and managing special tech events, including spotlight fairs, mock interviews, tech parent programming, and masterclass weeks.
- Advocating for daily educational assignments through company production meetings; ensuring clarity, accuracy, and consistency for staff, students, and families.
-Monitoring the scheduled use of instructional spaces and materials to ensure educational activities align with facility needs, production schedules, and safety standards.
