Job Summary
Responsible for all aspects of the costume, hair, and make up design for all Rose mainstage, metro tours, and youth/educational productions, including promo photos. Assists the costume shop manager with costume construction and shop maintenance. Alongside the costume shop manager, the resident costume designer will supervise part time/over-hire staff, apprentices, and volunteers.
Essential Job Duties
- Research and design costumes in consultation with show directors, and the Artistic Director.
- Generate all necessary designer paperwork.
- Including the creation of renderings, costume plot, costume piece list, laundry list, etc.
- Complete costume stock pulls for each show.
- In collaboration with the Costume Shop Manager, purchase supplies and materials for costumes, hair, & makeup.
- Drape, cut and construct costumes.
- Inventory, organize, and maintain all aspects of costume stock in conjunction with the Costume Shop Manager.
- Attend all design meetings and coordinate 1:1 meetings with team members as necessary.
- Attend all first rehearsals, designer runs, dress rehearsals, and previews as assigned by the Production Director.
- Provide supervision over part time/over-hire staff, wardrobe/backstage contracts, apprentices, and volunteers. Serve on the hiring committee for these positions as directed by the HR Director.
- Develop and monitor the annual budget in collaboration with the Costume Shop Manager & Production Director.
Other Job Duties
- Process donated materials.
- Attend all company meetings, including all staff.
- Work flexible schedule as needed to meet responsibilities.
- Participate in company events/activities as required.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Production Director.
Education, Training and Experience
- B.A. in theater, fashion design or similar area, OR equivalent experience.
Skills and Abilities
- Ability to design costumes and create renderings.
- Ability to make and follow patterns.
- Ability to sew and construct costumes and crafts using a variety of materials.
- Knowledge of costume history.
- Time management and organizational skills to prioritize tasks and assignments.
- Ability to meet all deadlines under pressure situations.
- Basic computer skills and working knowledge of Google drive.
- Act as a representative of the company at all times, providing excellent customer service to members, patrons, vendors and staff.
- Ability to interact and communicate effectively in writing and verbally with employees at all levels within the organization.
- Ability to work with guest designers.
- Ability to oversee multiple projects simultaneously.
- Ability to lead costume shop staff to meet goals and deadlines.
- Maintain current certification in CPR/1st Aid.

Physical Demands and Working Conditions
- Ability to stand or kneel for extended periods of time.
- Ability to use a sewing machine and perform various functions using fine motor skills.
- Ability to carry and manage oversize costumes and boxes during construction and storage.
- Ability to climb stairs and ladders.
- Must be able to lift at least 50lbs.
- On-site attendance is required.
