Breakdown
PHYL
SEEKING:
PHYLLIS "PHYL" CHESTER (Female, Mid-20s, Open Ethnicity). She has been raised working class in London by her older sister. Phyl is proudly plucky. She is impetuous and cutting, especially when she feels disrespected. In act one: Phyl is working as a governess in a wealthy country home. She feels that her life is unendingly dull and has a burning desire to see the world. Phyl has a magnetism and wanderlust to her - but also, often feels insecure. In acts two and three: Phyl is transported into a life of luxury by Jack, and living her wildest dreams. A lover of all things beautiful. Feels she has transcended her old life.
CATHY CHESTER (Female, Mid-Late 40s, Open Ethnicity) Phyl’s older sister, who works in an office in London and has never married. Cathy is 17 years older than Phyl, and single handedly raised her after their parents died tragically. She is nervous, self-conscious, and very modest. She works incredibly hard and never complains, though it takes a toll on her. She is truly patient and loving, with a constant worn anxiety behind her eyes. She would do anything to protect Phyl.
JACK FOLLIOTT (Male, Mid-30s, Open Ethnicity) He is charming, wealthy, and good-natured. Has a gift for taking life in stride. Makes a fantastic first impression. A man who enjoys an easeful, adventurous life and always lands on his feet. Makes Phyl feel genuinely cared for. Inspired and well-intentioned, though he doesn’t always think things through.
MR. WESTMACOTT (Male, 50s, Open Ethnicity). A friend of Jack’s father, who has known Jack for his whole life. Loyal, fastidious, and logical. Arrives to give Jack life changingly bad news. Calm in the face of chaos.
MRS. PONSONBY (Female, Late 40s, Open Ethnicity) An imposing, serious, and judgmental woman who has always lived a financially comfortable life. She abides by an extremely rigid system of values and propriety, and has strong opinions on "proper behavior." Mother to Mabel, Betty, and Olive.
MABEL PONSONBY (Female, 21 years old, Open Ethnicity) Beautiful, sweet, and warm . An ingenue who believes in love and goodness, and who finds herself completely smitten with the wrong man. She is easily manipulated by her mischievous little sisters.
OLIVE PONSONBY (Female, 13, Open Ethnicity) Betty's older sister. She is nosy and cheeky, with a nasty eavesdropping habit. Quick-witted and loves a bit of gossip. Of the sisters, Olive is more conniving and premeditated. She always gets what she wants.
BETTY PONSONBY (Female, 11, Open Ethnicity) Olive's younger sister. She is more naive than her sister, but all in for mischief and tricks. Inquisitive and impressionable. Of the sisters, Betty is more impulsive and childishly rude.
KATE / WAITER (Any gender identity, early-mid 20s Open Ethnicity) Kate is the maid to the Ponsonby family in Act One. She observes all but says little. Waiter is an employee at the hotel in Menton, France is Acts Two and Three. Able to do a French accent. Actors of all gender identities are encouraged to audition.
