Position Overview YAYA Theatre Company is seeking a high-level Musical Theatre Music Director / Vocal Director to join our Shenzhen company for a Spring 2026 resident production period. This is a production-driven role, not a class-by-class teaching position. The selected artist will work in close collaboration with YAYA’s Resident Artistic Director to build, rehearse, and deliver a fully staged musical theatre production by late June 2026, while leading vocal training and musical preparation for youth performers.

Contract Details

Location: Shenzhen, China

Contract Period: Late February 2026 – Late June 2026

Compensation: USD $5,000–$6,000 per month (pre-tax, commensurate with experience)

Schedule: Five working days per week (two regular days off; adjusted during production periods)

Key Responsibilities
Musical Direction & Vocal Leadership

Lead musical theatre vocal training for students ages 6–18
Coach soloists and ensembles in healthy technique, stylistic accuracy, storytelling, and musical interpretation

Guide performers from basic vocal execution to dramatic, intention-driven singing

Piano & Rehearsal Leadership

Confidently read scores and accompany rehearsals on piano

Lead vocal rehearsals, harmonies, and ensemble work

Support staging rehearsals in coordination with the director

Production Collaboration

Work closely with the Resident Artistic Director to align musical and dramatic storytelling

Maintain vocal consistency and musical quality throughout the rehearsal process

Take responsibility for the final musical and vocal standard of the production

Curriculum & Training Structure

Build a clear, technique-based vocal training system (not game-based instruction) Ensure all vocal work aligns with production timelines and performance goals Support a professional rehearsal environment rooted in real musical theatre practice

Candidate Profile Required

Strong piano skills with fluent sight-reading ability

Extensive experience teaching musical theatre voice

Professional musical theatre background (Broadway, Off-Broadway, West End, regional theatre, tours, or equivalent) Experience working on full musical theatre productions
Comfort collaborating with directors, choreographers, and production teams
Ability to work in an international, cross-cultural environment

Willingness to reside in Shenzhen for the full contract period

Preferred

Previous experience as a Music Director, Assistant Music Director, or Vocal Director Familiarity with American and/or British musical theatre styles
Experience working with youth performers in a production setting
Prior international teaching or residency experience
