The Village Collective is excited to introduce our newest program: The Village Playwrights Cohort! The program is a year-long developmental workshop for multiple early-career playwrights looking to develop a new play with The Village team and the other members of the cohort.
Program Overview
During their year-long residency, the writers will receive various resources from The Village to take their project to the next level. Each selected playwright will:
- Develop one full-length play over the course of 2025 and receive a workshop with professional actors that culminates in a public reading of their play as part of The Village’s New Play Festival
- Attend Monthly Meetings with your cohort, keeping track of personal goals and deadlines. Meetings will include script readings with professional actors, collaborative writing workshops, feedback sessions, director introductions, and panel discussions with industry professionals
- Present a section of their play-in-progress at one of The Village’s seasonal Salons events in 2025 (March, May, October, and December - subject to change)
Other opportunities include attending shows and readings with the cohort and program directors, seeking collaborators and connections within The Village’s artist community, and networking with theatre professionals.
Who We’re Looking For
- Early career, NYC-based, goal-oriented playwrights who have not yet received a “professional production” of any kind (“Professional Production” is classified for our purposes by an Off-Broadway or higher level production, as well as LORT productions or any New York productions that exceed a 3-week run)
- Playwrights who are eager to work on a new piece that has not received institutional development of any kind or any public or industry readings
- Artists who are excited by the opportunity to engage with the work of their cohort of writers and develop their work alongside other early-career playwrights
- Playwrights whose practice is not solely based in devising. Though devised work can be an aspect of the piece, it cannot be the sole means of generating material due to the structure of the program. We are also not looking for solo material.
