Manhattan Theatre Club is one of New York’s preeminent not-for-profit cultural institutions and a premier destination for both the most talented artists and discerning audiences to return to time and again. We produce seasons of bold, entertaining and thought-provoking new plays and musicals at our Samuel J. Friedman Theatre on Broadway and on our two off-Broadway stages at New York City Center. For over 50 years, MTC has been acclaimed for identifying, fostering and supporting extraordinary artists at all stages of their careers and for the consistent quality, range and originality of our over 600 premieres, which include nearly 20% of all of the new plays on Broadway since we opened the Friedman in 2003.
This Fellowship in Lighting Design provides an early career designer with the paid opportunity to engage with Allen and his team during the production process of THE BALUSTERS on Broadway. Additionally, the Fellow will have the opportunity to connect with staff members from MTC’s Artistic Production, General Management, and Production Management offices, as well as the IATSE Production Crew. As a result of this experience, the Fellow will learn how lighting design for Broadway is created and implemented, while growing their professional network and receiving personal mentorship.
MTC believes that equity, diversity, and inclusion should be essential elements of all activity within the organization. We are proud to be a preeminent theatre in one of the most diverse cities in America and strive to represent that both on and off-stage. Guided by our commitment to these values and in an effort to advocate for communities historically underrepresented in the theatre workforce, MTC is specifically interested in engaging early career design professionals who identify as BIPOC for this Fellowship.
The ideal candidate is an early career lighting designer with professional credits, but who has not yet worked on a Broadway production. They possess a comprehensive grasp of the production process through practical experiences on a semi-professional or professional level, and are looking to elevate that knowledge and apply their skill set at the Broadway scale. They are proactive and eager to seek answers and meaningful tasks that will lead to a deepened understanding of the lighting design process and its implementation, as well as current standards and practices for the creation of Broadway productions. Their schedules are sufficiently flexible to accommodate observation dates and times during the months of March and April 2026.
The Fellowship time commitment is approximately 75 hours over 4-5 weeks. Specific observation dates and times are flexible. They will be determined by the Fellow and Allen Lee Hughes based upon THE BALUSTERS production schedule. Compensation is $3,000.
