HILLBARN THEATRE 2026-2027 SEASON

PICKLEBALL

Written by Jeff Daniels

Directed by Marisa Keltie

First Rehearsal: July 21, 2026

Preview: August 20, 2026

Opening: August 21, 2026

Closing: September 13, 2026

SEEKING:

PERFECT (20s–40s): A dominant, intimidating elite player and coach figure. She treats pickleball like religion and competition like warfare. She runs drills, critiques form mercilessly, and pushes players toward “greatness” with almost cult-like intensity. Her presence is both comic and terrifying.

BILLIE (20s–40s): The emotional anchor of the group. She’s athletic enough to play seriously, but she’s also grounded and values camaraderie over ego. Billie is the one who reminds everyone that the game is supposed to be fun, and she often acts as referee in their petty battles.

LARRY (30’s–40’s): A comic striver: out of shape, out of his depth, and constantly treating pickleball as a weird dating opportunity. Larry is insecure, socially awkward, and hilariously blunt. He wants to improve, but mostly because he thinks it will help him meet women.

SHELDON (30’s–60’s): Once athletic, now physically broken (he waddles through the entire play). Sheldon is stubborn, sarcastic, and oddly lovable. He has deep affection for the group, even as he complains constantly and struggles with injury.

SPIKE (20’s–30’s): Fit, competitive, and often caught between being a good friend and wanting to win. Spike is the “alpha” of the foursome, but also anxious about status, partners, and rival players. He has moments of genuine warmth, especially with Sheldon.

RALPH (20’s–50’s): An older supporting character who appears in comedic moments, often as part of the larger pickleball social ecosystem. Ralph contributes to the absurdity of the park culture and the echo-chamber of loneliness and longing.

GUTENBERG

Written by Anthony King & Scott Brown

Directed by Chris Reber

First Rehearsal: July 21, 2026

Preview: August 20, 2026

Opening: August 21, 2026

Closing: September 13, 2026

DOUG SIMON (CAST) - tenor/baritone range (approximately A2–A4 with flexibility upward) - one half of the writing team presenting the musical. He is more grounded, detail-oriented, and cautious than his partner Bud, often serving as the “straight man” while still fully participating in the storytelling. This role requires strong comedic instincts and the ability to shift quickly between multiple characters.

BUD DAVENPORT (CAST) - high tenor (approximately C3–C5, with optional higher extensions) - the more energetic and enthusiastic half of the duo. He has a big personality and fully commits to every character and musical moment, bringing bold, sometimes over-the-top choices. Slightly naïve but endlessly optimistic, Bud drives much of the show’s chaotic energy.

DEWEY FINN: (This role is PRECAST) high tenor/rock tenor (approximately B2–D5, with optional extension to E5) - a charismatic, rebellious, and underachieving wannabe rock star who poses as a substitute teacher at a prestigious prep school. Though immature and often self-serving at the start, Dewey has a genuine passion for music and ultimately inspires his students to embrace their individuality and confidence through rock and roll. He is energetic, comedic, and unpredictable, with a strong ability to connect emotionally beneath his slacker exterior. This role requires exceptional comedic timing, high physical energy, and strong audience connection, along with the ability to balance humor with heart.

LAWRENCE: Tenor (C4-D5), Plays keyboard. Awkward and lacking in confidence, Lawrence is hesitant to attempt something “cool”, like joining a band, but he soon turns out to be a fantastic keyboardist.

KATIE: Alto (A3-D5),Plays bass. Quiet and serious, Katie already played the cello, but switched to bass at Dewey’s suggestion to fill out the band.

FREDDIE HAMILTON: Tenor (C4-D5), Plays drums. Freddie loves a bit of rowdiness and noise, making him a great drummer. His own father doesn’t see his ability, constantly belittling his son.

MARCY & SHONELLE: Mezzo/Alto (A3-D5) Quiet girls with angelic voices, Marcy and Shonelle are the band’s backup singers and dancers.

MASON: Mason is a total whiz with technology, and creates special effects and fantastic lighting designs for the band’s performances using his laptop.

BILLY: Flamboyant and artistic, Billy has a passionate interest in fashion, even though his father wants him to be a footballer like the other men in his family. He designs the band’s costumes.

JAMES: James is tough and reliable, making him a good security guard for the band. Mostly, he keeps an eye out for anyone coming while the band is secretly rehearsing!
