ALISON: (35-45, she/her, Mezzo-Soprano, E3-D5, any race/ethnicity) A lesbian cartoonist. A writer and artist, Alison is our storyteller, moving through time as she reflects on her life and her relationship with her father. Wry, self-aware, curious and funny.
MEDIUM ALISON/SUSAN DEY: (18-24, she/her, Mezzo-Soprano, G3-E5, any race/ethnicity) A booksmart and awkward college freshman at Oberlin, away from home for the first time. On a journey of self-discovery when she meets her first girlfriend. Earnest, thoughtful, a budding artist.
SMALL ALISON: (8-11, she/her, Mezzo-Soprano, B4-B5, any race/ethnicity) Strong-willed and fun-loving, learning about the world and herself.
BRUCE: (35-45, he/him, Baritone, A2-G4, any race/ethnicity) Alison’s father. High school English teacher by day, funeral home director by night, and antique collector on the weekend. A (mostly) closeted gay man, Bruce is passionate about his interests, but his own frustrations often erupt in anger and a desire to control those around him. Intense and driven.
HELEN: (35-45, she/her, Mezzo-Soprano, A3-E5, any race/ethnicity) Alison’s mother. A gifted performer and musician now doing her best to keep her family together. Helen keeps everyone moving forward, even if it means repressing her own wants and needs. Strong, resilient. The ability to play piano is a plus.
CHRISTIAN: (10-14, he/him, any range, any race/ethnicity) Alison’s older brother. Tries to be the leader as the oldest sibling. This character is a child and will be able to sing in whatever octave they are most comfortable.
JOHN: (6-9, he/him, any range, any race/ethnicity) Alison’s younger brother. Fun-loving and energetic. This character is a child and will be able to sing in whatever octave they are most comfortable.
ROY/MARK/PETE/BOBBY JEREMY: (19-25, he/him, Tenor, G3-A4, any race/ethnicity) Roy is a young man Bruce hires to do yard work. Mark is a high school junior. Pete is a mourner visiting the Bechdel funeral home. Bobby Jeremy is the lead singer on a television show in Alison’s imagination.
JOAN/SUSAN DEY: (18-24, she/her, Alto, G3-G4, any race/ethnicity) A student at Oberlin, comfortable with her own identity as a lesbian, who helps Medium Alison explore her sexuality and navigate her freshman year at college. Blunt, sarcastic, and still compassionate. Alison’s first girlfriend.
DEAR EVAN HANSEN
Book by Steven Levenson
Music and Lyrics by Benj Pasek & Justin Paul
Director: Gavin Mayer
Choreographer: Aimee Rials
Musical Director: Ben Kapilow
First Rehearsal: June 16, 2026
Performances: July 9-July 18, 2026
Closing: July 18, 2026
SEEKING:
EVAN HANSEN (18-22, he/him, Pop Tenor G2-B4, any race/ethnicity) Smart, sincere, and excruciatingly self-conscious, Evan prefers to hover in the background rather than risk possible rejection. He yearns for connection but doesn’t yet know how to find it.
ZOE MURPHY (18-22, she/her, Pop Soprano F3-E5, any race/ethnicity) Connor’s sister. Sensitive and sophisticated, with a sharp sense of humor, Zoe is able to step away from the typical games and rites of high school life. She is very conflicted about her brother’s death.
ALANA BECK (18-22, she/her, Pop Soprano F3-E5, any race/ethnicity) Evan’s classmate. Earnest and prone to big feelings. Alana hides her own fear of rejection beneath an ever-present smile and an almost aggressive friendliness.
CONNOR MURPHY (18-22, he/him, Pop Bari/Tenor G2-G4, any race/ethnicity) Full of angst and frustration, a lost teen prone to anger, Connor has presented as a troubled kid for as long as anyone can remember. His parents have tried everything they can to reach and understand him, but they do not succeed.
JARED KLEINMAN (18-22, he/him, Pop Tenor A2-B4, any race/ethnicity) As close to a friend as Evan has. Droll and sarcastic, Jared covers his own insecurities with put-on confidence and know-it-all responses.
HEIDI HANSEN (40s, she/her, Pop Alto F3-Eb5, any race/ethnicity) Evan’s mother. Smart and resourceful. Heidi loves her son fiercely but fears they have begun to grow apart. She has to work very hard and is stretched thin in an effort to keep everything together.
CYNTHIA MURPHY (40s, she/her, Pop Soprano F#3-E5, any race/ethnicity) Connor and Zoe’s mother. To Evan, she seems to be the perfect mother, nurturing, available, and willing to talk about anything. To her own children, it’s a bit more complicated.
LARRY MURPHY (40s, Pop Bari/Tenor F#2-G4, any race/ethnicity) Connor and Zoe’s father. Though often tense and sometimes withholding, he presents as strong, confident, and reliable; qualities that Evan longs for in a dad.
