The Danish Royal Court


Hamlet: The Prince of Denmark, son of Gertrude and the recently deceased king of Denmark, contemplative, in love with Ophelia, believed by others to be fraught with madness

King Claudius: recently crowned King of Denmark, Hamlet’s Uncle, married to Gertrude

Ghost: resembling the late king, Hamlet’s father,

Queen Gertrude: Hamlet’s mother, now wife of Claudius


Courtiers and Others of the Court

Polonius: right-hand man to Claudius, Laertes and Ophelia’s father

Laertes: Polonius’ son, Ophelia’s brother

Ophelia: Polonius’ daughter, believes Hamlet is “mad for her love “

Rosencrantz and Guildenstern: Courtiers, former schoolfellows of Hamlet

Horatio: A close friend and confidant of Hamlet
